Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of positions created to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
